My free-standing and wearable sculptures are created from post-consumer and found metals using cold-connection techniques. No soldering or welding – metal is used to join metal; rivets, wire or brads. I use ancient and traditional jewelry methods of joining metal in a modern context with non-precious metals.
I love the process of creating something new, out of objects that once had a completely different origin. I search for lost, tossed or abandoned bits of metal especially those that been flattened and distorted by their contact with vehicles, concrete and asphalt.
Once these urban metals are found, it’s like a free-form jigsaw puzzle. What I notice first is the texture, the colour, the patina – then the shape and form of the pieces of metal start to suggest a face, an arm, a torso and a new persona emerges.
